In the Computing & ICT Department we are committed to giving all students, regardless of ability, an understanding of the role that the Computing plays in the world in which they live alongside practical understanding of the uses of a range of computing technologies. In providing students with these computational skills, it is expected that their knowledge and understanding develops as they apply these across the curriculum
The program of study at Key Stage 3 allows students to develop their knowledge and understanding of computing concepts. The aims of the Computer Science Department are to facilitate the understanding of the concepts and technology which underpin the field and to develop students’ ability to analyse problems, plan and develop programmed solutions. The schemes of work are selected to give a balanced and varied programme of study, incorporating a full range of differentiation to meet all our students’ needs. Progression through the key stages leads to students being expected to apply greater understanding and develop into independent learners.

GCSE Computer Science
The course gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. The course will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills through the study of computer programming, giving students a fun and interesting way to develop these skills, which can be transferred to other subjects and even applied in day-to-day life.
The course is covered using a blended approach to students learning with elements from the 3 strands running concurrently. The CA is attempted in Year 11 to a board set brief.

Cambridge Nationals in iMedia
Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia are media sector-focused, including film, television, web development, gaming and animation, and have IT at their heart. They provide knowledge in a number of key areas in this field from pre-production skills to digital animation and have a motivating, hands-on approach to both teaching and learning. Cambridge Nationals deliver skills across the whole range of learning styles and abilities, effectively engaging and inspiring all students to achieve great things.
Unit R087: Creating interactive multimedia products – internally assessed – 10 hours coursework.
Interactive multimedia products are used widely in everyday life and the creative and digital media sector. They are used in computer games, mobile phone applications, presentations and many other areas. This unit will enable learners to understand the basics of interactive multimedia products for the creative and digital media sector. They will learn where and why interactive multimedia is used and what features are needed for a given purpose. It will enable them to interpret a client brief, and to use timeframes, deadlines and preparation techniques as part of the planning and creation process when creating an interactive multimedia product. On completion of this unit, learners will understand the purpose and properties of interactive multimedia products, be able to plan and create an interactive multimedia product to a client’s requirements and review it, identifying areas for improvement.
Unit R085: Creating a multipage website – internally assessed – 10 hours coursework.
Multipage websites are the basis of internet content and are therefore used extensively in the creative digital media sector, whether for mobile phones or computers in all their forms. This unit will enable learners to understand the basics of creating multipage websites. It will enable learners to demonstrate their creativity by combining components to create a functional, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing website. It will allow them to interpret a client brief and to use planning and preparation techniques when developing a multipage website. On completion of this unit, learners will be able to explore and understand the different properties, purposes and features of multipage websites, plan and create a multipage website and review the final website against a specific brief.
Unit R081: Pre-production skills – Externally assessment – exam 1hr 30 minutes
This unit will enable learners to understand pre-production skills used in the creative and digital media sector. It will develop their understanding of the client brief, timeframes, deadlines and preparation techniques that form part of the planning and creation process.
Planning is an essential part of working in the creative and digital media sector. This unit will enable learners to acquire the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to create digital media products and gain an understanding of their application.
On completion of this unit, learners will understand the purpose and uses of a range of pre-production techniques. They will be able to plan pre-production of a creative digital media product to a client brief, and will understand how to review pre-production documents.
Learners studying the optional units will be able to apply knowledge and understanding gained in this unit to help develop their skills further during the completion of those units.
Unit R082: Creating digital graphics – internally assessed – 10 hours coursework time
This unit builds on unit R081 and learners will be able to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding gained in that unit and vice versa.
Digital graphics feature in many areas of our lives and play a very important part in today’s world. The digital media sector relies heavily on these visual stimulants within the products it produces, to communicate messages effectively.
The aim of this unit is for learners to understand the basics of digital graphics editing for the creative and digital media sector. They will learn where and why digital graphics are used and what techniques are involved in their creation. This unit will develop learners’ understanding of the client brief, timeframes, deadlines and preparation techniques as part of the planning and creation process.
On completion of this unit, learners will understand the purpose and properties of digital graphics, and know where and how they are used. They will be able to plan the creation of digital graphics, create new digital graphics using a range of editing techniques and review a completed graphic against a specific brief.
Key Stage 5 ICT curriculum options
BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT
The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT is a work-related IT qualification that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in this sector. It is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Level.
We would encourage all students to code as much as they can. Practical home learning tasks will be set from time to time and can be completed using free online development tools.
A Computer Club runs every Thursday lunchtime, and is staffed by members of the department to promote an atmosphere of independent, cross-curricular study and help pupils to develop key computing skills.
