Dear Parent,

I hope you are all well and safe.  I thought it would be helpful to provide you with some updates as we reach the end of our first week of lockdown.  Christmas seems a long time ago!

Remote Learning

  • Infection rates in the community are as high as I have ever seen them and the number of cases known to the school is increasing daily.  With this in mind, I am conscious that anything we put in place must be sustainable.  We need to strike a balance between academic challenge and keeping your child engaged with their learning, whilst also considering their (and your) wellbeing.  I sincerely hope that all our pupils will return after the February half-term, but the Prime Minister did include a number of caveats which makes me feel that this could continue into the next half term as well, hopefully not.
  • The aim of our remote learning programme is to keep all our pupils engaged with their learning in a meaningful and manageable way.  Whilst putting this programme together, I have consulted a wide number of parents, staff and pupils.  I will also ask for your feedback as the weeks go by.
  • Attached at the end of this letter is the plan for remote learning for the rest of the half term (5 weeks).  We will constantly review and monitor this and seek your views over the next few weeks.  The programme starts on Monday 11th January at 9am.

Microsoft Teams and remote learning support

  • All pupils have access to Office 365 and Microsoft Teams through their school email and they have all had remote learning lessons to prepare them for this eventuality.  Your child’s email address, in most cases, follows this format: year of entry, initial, surname @holyfamilyhighschool.co.uk (e.g. 18jbloggs@holyfamilyhighschool.co.uk).
  • We also have a helpdesk to deal with any issues logging onto Teams or any other school app, password-reset@holyfamilyhighschool.co.uk
  • The ‘Online Learning’ section of our school website has parent information, instructional videos and support for pupils when they are learning at home.

Devices/Laptops

Please contact your child’s Progress Leader by email if they do not have access to the internet or a device that supports the Teams App and learning from home.  We have a limited number of devices/laptops to support you if this is a barrier to engaging with remote learning.

Turn your PlayStation or an Xbox into a traditional PC

This article shows how you can turn your PlayStation or Xbox into something like a traditional PC.  It works best with a keyboard and mouse which you can get on Amazon for as little as £10. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/playstation-xbox-home-learning-web-browser-internet-b1783216.html

‘Get help with technology - Increasing data allowances on mobile devices’

This Department for Education (DfE) scheme is open to children who:

  • Don’t have access to a fixed broadband connection.
  • Cannot afford additional data needed to access educational resources.
  • Have access to a mobile device that uses a network participating in the scheme.
  • Have been advised not to attend school.

If you think your child is eligible for additional mobile data, you will need to provide the information requested in this link.  You can only access the scheme through school. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CCHXVQB

Free School Meals for pupils in Years 7-13

If your child receives Free School Meals, we will email you your voucher at the end of each week (starting today). Please contact us if you need any support.

Vulnerable and Key Worker children

School will continue to stay open for vulnerable children and key worker children.  If you need any information, please email Mr Westbury p.westbury@holyfamilyhighschool.co.uk.

External exams (Years 11, 12 & 13)

  • As you will have heard, all GCSE, AS and A level summer exams have been cancelled.
  • All January and February external exams have also been cancelled.
  • The government has said that grades awarded will be based on teacher assessments.  We don't yet know how the government will do this but we are sure that they will ask us for evidence of work for any grade given.
  • It is very important that your child engages with their remote learning.  This is a way of providing evidence for their teacher.
  • Also, we plan to have their mock exams as soon as they come back into school, whenever that may be.  Their teachers will provide lessons, revision materials/lists and support to help them prepare for their mocks.  If they are taking a coursework based qualification, they will need to provide the evidence their teachers ask for.
  • If they were not happy with the grades in their report before Christmas, this is a great opportunity to work hard, engage with their teachers through remote learning and try to improve on their grade.
  • I'll write again when we have more information and we will do all we can to support them over the next few months.

Lateral Flow Device (COVID) Testing

Starting on Monday, pupils and staff who are on site, and have given their consent, will be tested weekly in school.  I will write to all other parents and pupils about the process and the consent forms when we are closer to returning to school.  A lot may happen between now and then.

Thank you for your patience and support.  I’m sure you will appreciate that things are changing all the time and I will keep you informed of any further updates as soon as I can.  If you need us at any time, please contact us and we will do all we can to help.

Take care and best wishes,

Mr Symes

Remote Learning Programme (start Monday 11th January)

General Information about our Remote Learning Programme

  • All work will be set through Teams.  Each year group has a new weekly timetable to help them structure their day/week.
  • Most sessions will be lessons their teachers have pre-recorded and they will be posted onto Teams by 9am on the morning they are timetabled.
  • Their teachers will be available through Teams to support them throughout the day.  If there is a delay in replying to a question, it could be that their teacher is in school supervising our key worker children or involved in the lateral flow testing.
  • Some sessions will be live and their teachers will schedule the lesson through Teams.
  • If your child cannot make the live lesson, they will still be able to access the materials and lesson on Teams.
  • Your child will submit their work through Teams and their teachers will mark their work regularly and feedback through Teams.
  • No additional homework will be set.  Teachers may signpost your child to apps and websites to encourage further independent learning e.g. Seneca, GCSE POD, Tassomai, PIXL, Oak Academy, Maths Watch etc.

Monitoring

  • On Wednesday and Friday afternoons, teachers will alert your child through Teams and ClassCharts if they have not yet completed their work.  You can also monitor this through the ClassCharts App.
  • If they are falling behind in a number of subjects, you may receive an email on a Wednesday and/or a Friday evening to alert you of this.  This way you will know if your child is fully engaged with their remote learning programme.
  • Your child’s teacher can monitor how well they are engaging with their work through ‘Insights’ on Teams

Wellbeing

  • Wellbeing activities and challenges will be set on ClassCharts every Wednesday for all year groups (Wellbeing Wednesday).  We will also signpost pupils to websites that can support them.
  • Each year group has two core PE sessions timetabled every week.
  • Teachers will use merits and postcards in ClassCharts to reward and motivate your child.
  • Each year group has a Wellbeing session timetabled every Friday.  This will be from their Progress Leader (similar to an assembly) where they will share positive messages and words of encouragement, advice on how to stay organized and keep motivated and share any news that is relevant to their year group.
  • Your child’s Form Tutor will make a wellbeing call home every fortnight to see if they (and you) are okay and if you need our help in anyway.
  • Your child can access their teachers through Teams and by email.

Below are the timetables for next week. We will send them out again on Monday in a way that you can print off.  I will also put these on ClassCharts and send out to all pupils tonight.
